The chamber.ĭuring the late 1950s, Spector worked with Brill Building songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller during a period when they sought a fuller sound by the use of excessive instrumentation, using up to five electric guitars and four percussionists. Then, when we sent it all into the chamber, this air effect is what was heard-all the notes jumbled and fuzzy. We were working on the transparency of music that was the Teddy Bears sound: you had a lot of air moving around, notes being played in the air but not directly into the mics. There weren't combinations of sound and, with the advent of Phil Spector, we find sound combinations, which-scientifically speaking-is a brilliant aspect of sound production." Origins According to Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson, who used the formula extensively: "In the '40s and '50s, arrangements were considered 'OK here, listen to that French horn' or 'listen to this string section now.' It was all a definite sound. The intricacies of the technique were unprecedented in the field of sound production for popular music. By 1979, the use of compression had become common on the radio, marking the trend that led to the loudness war in the 1980s. The combination of large ensembles with reverberation effects also increased the average audio power in a way that resembles compression. He characterized his methods as "a Wagnerian approach to rock & roll: little symphonies for the kids". Reverb from an echo chamber was also highlighted for additional texture. Īmong other features of the sound, Spector incorporated an array of orchestral instruments ( strings, woodwind, brass and percussion) not previously associated with youth-oriented pop music. Mixed well enough, the three instruments would then be indistinguishable to the listener. For example, Spector often duplicated a part played by an acoustic piano with an electric piano and a harpsichord. To attain the Wall of Sound, Spector's arrangements called for large ensembles (including some instruments not generally used for ensemble playing, such as electric and acoustic guitars), with multiple instruments doubling or tripling many of the parts to create a fuller, richer tone. It all fit together like a jigsaw." Ī popular misconception holds that the Wall of Sound was created simply through a maximum of noise and distortion, but the method was actually more nuanced. Spector explained in 1964: "I was looking for a sound, a sound so strong that if the material was not the greatest, the sound would carry the record. The intention was to exploit the possibilities of studio recording to create an unusually dense orchestral aesthetic that came across well through radios and jukeboxes of the era. The Wall of Sound (also called the Spector Sound) is a music production formula developed by American record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios, in the 1960s, with assistance from engineer Larry Levine and the conglomerate of session musicians later known as " the Wrecking Crew". Until the actress’ death, which Spector maintained was an “accidental suicide”, few residents even knew the mansion belonged to the reclusive producer, who spent his remaining years in a prison hospital east of Stockton.Look up wall of sound in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. The star of “Barbarian Queen” and other B-movies was found shot dead in the foyer of Spector’s mansion in the hills overlooking Alhambra, a modest suburban town on the edge of Los Angeles. After a trial in 2009, he was handed the sentenced of 19 years to life. Spector was convicted of murdering Clarkson in at his castle-like mansion on the edge of Los Angeles. His lawyer subsequently confirmed that date to The Associated Press. While most sources give Spector’s birth date as 1940, it was listed as 1939 in court documents following his arrest. Spector revolutionised pop with his "wall of sound" music production formula, working with the likes of the Beatles, the Righteous Brothers and Ike, as well as Tina Turner.Ĭalifornia state prison officials said he died of natural causes at a hospital. The atlatl possessed an impressive range of 55 meters (180 feet), with an extreme reach of 74 meters (243 feet), enabling the user to throw a projectile at a longer range than hand-thrown spears. The darts also had ceremonial importance, usually being manufactured during the feast to Quecholli, an alcohol-fueled festival that celebrated the god of the hunt, Mixcotl. The conquistadors attested that the darts of the atlatl were so sharp they could pierce any type of armor and cause fatal damage. The barbed dart was particularly feared by Spanish conquistadors, who had to cut it out of their wound instead of pull. The atlatl launched several types of specialized projectiles including two-pronged, three-pronged, and barbed darts which were made from fish bone, copper, flint, and obsidian points often hardened in fire. Loops or pegs constructed on the side a third of the way up the atlatl ensured Aztec warriors maintained good grip. One extant example has two grooves, suggesting that on some atlatl two darts could be simultaneously loaded. Emblazoned on its topmost point was a hook and a groove in the wood where projectiles were placed. Aztec projectile and shock weapons usually featured this signature glass, as did its most fearsome cudgel, the macauahuitl, which cut short the lives of many Spanish invaders as the ancient Empire fell. In fact, it’s still used today in surgical instruments, owing to its superior sharpness. It was extremely strong, with obsidian points able to penetrate animal skin three times more effectively than other materials. Despite their technological handicaps, they were incredibly skilled at making a variety of murderous armaments that often competed with the steel-forged armories of their Spanish foes, whose conquest of the Aztecs and their lands represented a grisly and infamous chapter of early American history.Īztec weapons ranged from bows and arrows to advanced knives like this one made of stone. The Aztecs were a native Mesoamerican culture that thrived in the forests, jungles, and plains of Central Mexico from 1300 until 1521, when their capital Tenochtitlan was seized by Hernán Cortés and his legion of Spanish conquistadors. It came with one installed sharp point, and one spare. The second applicator down- blue retract o matic. To be honest, my pins came from the following link. I've even been able to use certain blunt tipped pins with them. You can use any sharp tipped appicator pin- as far as I know. The crazy low cost is something that using an extra one here or there can be tollerated. Even though I feel as if they tag working around made a slightly larger than normal hole in the ear.Ītt his stage of the game, we're going 100% Hasco until they change something on us, and it becomes more expensive to use them. I did like the Ztags- but my applicator pin rusted like an SOB and so it didn't work right, Can't complain about them though. After several years, it seems that we have a complete makeover with the cowherd's tags. In regards to other tags, we've used Ztags, Allflex, YTex, you name, it we've tried it. The only extra cost, would be a sharp pin to purchase and put on any Ytex, or Allflex tagger that you have. I prefer these over any other kind of button. ![]() Now, the other complaint that some people have- is that the buttons are not self piercing- which to me I prefer as I'm often tired of having older buttons which get weak, and the pin pushes it to the side, and so you don't actually pierce the ear, but just bloody it up. To tell the truth, I've only used a few of their prenumbered tags, and after 10 years I think you'll still be able to read them, unlike some brands. unless the Ytex tags which fade after about 5 years. I really like their blank tags- use a marker and get plenty of black ink on there (double dose on each number)- and you'll never not be able to read it. but with my 4 tag tagging system (plus ear tattoo), what's one more tag? And with my bad eyes, as big as the tags can be- is a plus. Really my only complaint with them is using the extra large, cattle tags on my sheep- and the tags are simply too heavy and get ripped out. In terms of retention- SUPER in the cattle- Don't think I've ever had more than 2 or 3 fall out. We also pre-ordered 50 tags, and got the same discounted rates on them by picking them up at the show. This year, while down there- we picked up 100 cow (40) and sheep (60) tags, for a grand total of $30- tax free- show discount- and no shipping. Super great people to work with, and try to do anything to get us cheaper eartags. They also have a discount rack of seconds (both numbered and blank), which most of the time are a little off color- or have numbers imprinted on the buttons- for about half cost. Last year, I picked up about 20 free blank cow sized, 10 black calf sized, and about 15 blank sheep sized ones for FREE. They have a booth at Louisville, that we raid every year. Hands down, the best, CHEAPEST ear tags available come from hasco. ![]() Between an engraveable tag, a tattoo and a freeze brand, I always know who "she" is. Ive been told you can use the same tagger for both brands of tags, you just have to change the button pin for each different kind of tag.Īs far as the z-tag, there are things I like about them. I also like the way the y-tex tags hold ink a lot better than all-flex. The neck of the tag is longer on the y-tex tags making hit hang down further from the ear thus making it easier to read. I love the piston action y-tex applicator it is very handy to use. For baby calves, I have used both but have switched exclusively to Y-tex for a lot of reasons.
